All requests must be made in writing. No requests made by phone or e-mail will be accepted.

The program is for Kindergarten thru 12th grade beginning with 5 year olds – no Pre-K. They do not have a ticket program for children younger than 5.

The program is for families living within a 100 mile radius of the State Fair of Texas Fairgrounds.

Each family must submit individually to avoid duplicate requests.  We do not accept requests from home school groups or associations.

Please submit your request on school letterhead, if you have it (This is a great time for you to create a logo for your homeschool and create your own letterhead. This came in handy several times over our homeschooling career and especially at graduation. Make is a family project and vote on the best one.).  If not, any paper/stationery is fine, just make sure to include your name and address in your letter.

Include the ages and grade levels of each student. Name of student is not necessary. Requests without this information will be returned unfilled.

We can send one teacher ticket per family. If you would like a teacher ticket, please include your request in your letter.

Include a daytime phone number where we can reach you in case you have left out any information.

Include a business size stamped envelope. Please DO NOT address the envelope in any way as we will print address labels. The envelope must be business size because of the length of the tickets.

All requests must be POSTMARKED AND COMPLETE by the deadline date of Friday, May 29, 2009. Incomplete requests and requests arriving after this date will be returned unfilled.

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken n coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch,  waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a  long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know, and love, the story about Grandma’s  aprons.  Or it can be a good history lesson for those that have no idea how the apron played a part in our lives.

REMEMBER:
 
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I don’t  think I ever caught anything from an apron……

Forget what you think you know about 4-H. 4-H is so much more than showing animals…although there is that too. you can do beef, clothing and textiles, citizenship, food and nutrition, forestry, horse, leadership, meat science, poultry, quiz bowl, rabbit, range science, sheep and goats, soil and crop science, swine, veterinary science, entomology, horticulture, character development, water and they are constantly expanding.

This year, as a parent, was my first year to attend the Texas 4-H Roundup. I was extremely surprised by the level of excellence in both the participants and the leadership of the organization.

If you desire for yourself or your child to be a leader in the world…run, do not stop and collect $200, to the nearest 4-H club and JOIN!

Friends and Family: Welcome to our graduation ceremony. No matter whom you came for we would all like to thank you for supporting us and joining us for this memorable occasion in our lives. I have known both Haddie and Karah for a long time.

So, I decided that I would tell you guys a few stories from my childhood so you can see a little into the three of us.

I have known Karah since I was born as, our moms were friends when they were pregnant. We have been best friends ever since. Starting out living a few blocks apart to now living a few houses apart.

Haddie I have known since my grandparents adopted her into our family in 1996. I remember waiting at my grandparents house for them to come into the house with her. It has always been very strange having an aunt that is only a month older than you but, we have always been more of friends than anything else.

Well, when we were kids Karah and I were always at each others houses. We were constantly playing different games and making up some of our own. Sailor Moon was one of our favorite cartoons and we watched every day. We even dressed up as our favorite characters one Halloween which was very exciting for us. Our moms made the costumes and took us trick or treating together.

As we got older the shows changed, our personalities changed and we got different friends. It was always strange talking about our “new” friends and telling each other about our days at school. We were both excited when our moms decided to home school us together in Kindergarten. I lost my first tooth with Karah by my side and we got to do all our school work together. When we moved into 1^st grade our parents decided to enroll us in the same school, Ovilla Christian School.

Right before my second grade year Haddie came into the picture. She was always a sweet child and was my new aunt from China. I was very excited to have her in the family as were all of us. When my grandpa became the principal of Christway Academy he asked my mom to teach music and, while I moved on to Christway Academy in the 2^nd grade Karah stayed at Ovilla while we still remained friends and made some new friends. Even though we had different teachers, we were still always at each others houses. Me and Haddie saw a lot of each other,  we were a grade apart and our teachers loved mixing the two classes together. This meant, we spent a lot of time together.

Once I got into 3^rd grade my mom decided to home school me again and has up until now. Karah and I always remained friends and Haddie hung out with us sometimes. We all attended the same church, Countryside Baptist Church with my grandpa as the pastor. In the 4^th grade my parents decided they wanted to move to Ennis. This meant I was going to make new friends. Although, I would still keep in contact with the old ones we wouldn’t get to see each other as often. Shortly after moving to Ennis my parents decided they wanted to change churches to something closer and we chose Baylor Baptist Church. I quickly made friends and some of you are here today.

Eventually, The Grandon’s decided they wanted to move to Ennis, Actually, they lived with us for a little while while they were waiting on their house. We spent a lot of time together in those days even though Karah had to get up very early to go to school. Since then we have lived only a few houses apart and we have loved being within walking distance of each other.

Eventually Aunt Tammie decided she wanted to home school Karah and we have been even closer still. We have done many things together from being in the same home school group to having out moms teach COD a co-op program. All of our teachers were very good. We learned everything from Drama to Voice to Finances. And, who could forget those home-ec classes, I think Grammie laughed more than anyone I have ever seen. I never saw what she was really like till she was supposed to be teaching. I loved every minute of it. Classes were always very entertaining and even though none of us wanted to learn “proper table etiquette” We all stuck through it together.

Once I got into the youth in 7^th grade my youth pastors wife taught a group of students song in sign and she is a large reason I have chosen Deaf Education as my major. I loved the look of the signs with the music and even when she changed churches I have continued learning more and more signs and performing all over Texas.

My biggest accomplishment was when Matt asked me if I would join 4-H in the 9^th grade and perform a song with him in sign. We didn’t do very well that year but, came back the next year to take 1^st at the state level. That is one of my biggest accomplishments to date.

I have been actively involved in 4-H ever since and have attended many camps and made many new friends. I have loved getting to know all of them and I am very sad to not see them as much anymore.

Me and Karah were very excited in the 9^th grade to have our first prom together at the Christian Home school prom and have been together ever since. Although some years we have gone together as friends and danced with different guys some years we have gotten to take guys to dance with. Every year we would get together in the morning with our moms and we would get our hair and make up done with Robin, we would then move on to get our nails done and eventually would head to the hotel. One year we had a car break down, another year we had to fit all of us in my mom’s suburban because Karah’s parents were on the set up crew while still other years everything happened as it was supposed to, and those were my favorite! My favorite year was when Haddie came along and took pictures of us while we were getting ready. It was awesome having her there and helping in the preparation. She helped us get ready, watched as we sat for an hour getting all our hair done, and helped all of us get Chelsea into her Civil War Ballgown. Yes, it did take three of us to get her into the dress.

When we decided to do our graduation ceremony together we were all very excited. At our first meeting we spent 3 hours discussing what color robes we were going to wear, the decorations for the room and the balloon colors for the tables. We discussed what we would be doing after graduation, degree plans and plans for after college.

Although all of us have grown up and gotten older over the years, Even though we have all changed what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives more times than I can count we have still always remained friends. Though we have drifted apart at times we always ended up in the same place, back together. Even though we have had little quarrels here and there we have always known that the other would be here for us no matter what. Now, since we are all parting ways I will leave knowing that no matter what you guys will always be there when I need you. You will always be there supporting me. And, no matter who comes and goes in our lives we will always have each other and that will never change.

And all God’s people said, “Amen!”

Deep Roots Academy Class of 2008

Okay, everyone is on high alert! Nerves are frazzled. Company is in town. Relatives are already beginning to wear us out. It is time, once again, to stop and pray. Remember this day is NOT about you! This day is about your graduate. High School graduation is all about your graduating student! Do not allow yourself to become clouded by all the other superficial things that will be going on. Aunt Sally will not have a heart attach if things do not go her way and Uncle Fester will be just fine if you don’t serve his Great Grandma’s special punch (that your graduate hates!) LOL Be in prayer and keep your spirits high!

The day before the BIG day checklist:

  • 1 punch table – table cloth
  • 1 cake table – table cloth
  • 1 small laptop table at the front of the room
• Decorations
  • balloons ordered?
  • banner hung behind stage
  • Set up 160 chairs
  • podium

You just never know what your kids are doing while you’re asleep. But, what they don’t know is that I found this video on my camcorder and have uploaded it! Our 2008 Graduates Jumping for Joy

Now that each family has had some time to accomplish their given tasks from the last meeting it is time to meet again and firm up some additional details. Also, to see if we had anymore grand and glorious ideas that just had to be implemented.

At this point each students photos have been taken and the group photos are ready to go.

Notes from our second meeting:

• Cap, Gown and tassel – ordered from American Cap & Gown, Inc.

• Dad’s each need a 2-3 minutes charge/blessing speech for their child during the ceremony
• Don’t forget to finish your 3-5 minutes video/PowerPoint presentation
