It doesn’t matter if you are preparing a billion dollar corporation for a hostile takeover or getting your family ready for Christmas company; each require most of the same level of savvy on the part of their leaders.

Good parents and TEAM Leaders remember to recognize and motivate their team. Great TEAM Leaders do it every day. Here are some proven methods for making sure that praising your TEAM becomes part of your daily routine.

PUT TEAM MEMBERS ON YOUR WEEKLY “TO DO” LIST. Add these names on your list of goals to accomplish. Then cross off the names as you praise them. Your children are never too old to appreciate adoration and praise from their parents.

USE VOICE MAIL. Rather than using it only to assign tasks, leave TEAM Members voice mail messages praising them for a job well done, a sales level achieved or new recruits. Do it from you cell phone while you are out and about. Your kids will act like they think you are out of your mind for leaving them a voice mail…but inside you have made their day.

WRITE NOTES AT THE END OF THE DAY. Keep a stack of Thank you note cards on your desk, kitchen counter or night stand where your can’t ignore them. At the end of the day. take a minute to write thank-you notes to any TEAM Member who made a difference that day. Especially in this day and age of technology, there is nothing that touches a person as deeply as a heart-felt hand written note. Don’t worry about trying to write a long dissertation on their accomplishments…just make it short and sweet.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY, PUT FIVE COINS IN YOUR POCKET. Then, during the day, each time you praise a TEAM Member, transfer a coin to your other pocket. It may sound corny, but once you get in the habit, you’ll start relying on tips like this one. I believe it was Zig Ziglar where I first heard this idea and you just can’t beat a great tip from the Zig himself.

I thought I would try something new this year. I am using my screen saver to give me a kick-in-the-pants encouragement and motivation. This is the quote I have chosen for February:

“Effective people are not problem-minded;

they’re opportunity-minded.

They feed opportunities and starve problems.”

-Stephen Covey

I see that quote a million times a day. It was real nice at first, then I felt like my computer monitor had it out for me and finally I began to move into action. Now maybe you can instantly institute a new philosophy but for me it takes a good 30 days. I am only two months into my screen saver experiment but so far it has proven to be simple and quite effective.

I would challenge you with two things:

Find yourself a quote to lift your spirits, spur you on or kick-you-in-the-pants and make use of your computers screen saver. Changing the Marquee Screen Saver is rated on an easy scale but call me if you need help figuring it out.

Don’t spend time focusing on your problems. Spend time focusing on your opportunities. Feeding an opportunity can also help to feed you!

Share your story with me. I would love to publish your great ideas and how they have worked for you.

Whew! Has it been a week for you? It has for me! Time sure flies when you’re having fun!

Sunday I was in a neighboring city at a 4-H meeting (Texas Agrilife – the best at youth leadership development). At the entrance to the meeting facility was a huge Magnolia tree. I don’t know how old this magnificent tree is but it is gigantic! I can only imagine how many passing of the seasons it has seen. On this tree there were some strange looking pine cone shaped things. I realized on the ground all around this tree were these pine cone shaped objects. On these peculiar creations were some shiny red beadlike things. Some of the beadlike things had detached themselves and were individually scattered around. Of course, I realized the pine cone was where the flower had been and that the pine cone wasn’t a pine cone at all but a seed pod. The beadlike objects were the seeds of the magnolia tree.

This reminded me of my business. The corporation that supplies my training, events and products is like the giant magnolia tree: stable, with a firm foundation, ebbing and flowing in the wind but always steadfast, deep roots extending below the earth where you cannot see. We all start out as individual business owners – with the same tree to offer genetics, nourishment and support. Some business owners bud and flower bigger and brighter than others – these are the business owners who see the value of plugging in to the system and staying plugged in. Some quickly flower but then quickly fade – these are the business sprinters that didn’t do any endurance training and won’t go the distance. Some buds never flower at all – some individuals never do anything and let themselves die without ever living. Some buds are infested with bugs, throw in the towel and don’t permit themselves to bloom – these are those negative influences that you allow to get you down and keep you down. You want to be the bright bloomer!

What is the real purpose of the magnolia tree? I believe that the real purpose of the tree is to send its seeds out as far as it can so it can free these seeds to start their own tree.

Wendy, what are you talking about? Your seeds are the fruition of your goals and dreams: the things that you value and want to pass on to your family and friends. For some of you the seed might be financial gain, a house that will live through the generations, a large piece of land for a family heritage, jewelry, don’t just have an investment account but own the entire brokerage firm or maybe a Swiss bank account. For others your seed might be traveling memories to give your children, a birthday party that makes the newspapers (in a good way J), a home that always entertains, a wardrobe that any movie star would be proud to own, visiting and buying something at a European fashion show or recording that album you have always dreamed about. I am sure some would like to start a foundation to do research for some dreaded disease, money to help a kid “Make a Wish”, feed an entire country for a year, save the whales or be the “go to” person for your family. Going one step further there are those of you who would just like to be able to do whatever the heck you felt like – whenever you felt like doing it! This is what the seeds are doing. The seeds are being scattered so you can make your mark on your family, community, country and your world.

What will your tree look like when you help others to do the same? The fantastic thing is I have the privilege to see people bud, flower, go to seed and begin their own offspring. What a great business! I will be there right beside you cheering you on to be the best that you can be, giving you gentle nudges when you start to let the bugs infest your bloom. In life and in business only you have the power to decide how many seeds you will scatter. Are you ready?
