Are any of these moving for you? Are any of these just sitting still for you?

A friend of mine sent these to me the other day and I just could not resist sharing them with you.

These images were originally created to test the level of stress that a person can handle. Supposedly, the slower the pictures move, the better your ability to handle stress.

Evidently, criminals were tested using these images. When they looked at them the images were spinning around like crazy. However, senior citizens and children would see the images as still graphics.

None of these images are actually animated. They are all still image .jpg files.

What do you see?

Would you like to get Daily Quotes for your Microsoft Outlook?

Like many of you I have switched from a paper planner to a digital planner. My phone syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My iPod Touch syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My PDA syncs with Microsoft Outlook. My PC displays Microsoft Outlook. My Google Calendar syncs with Microsoft Outlook. I digress. The one thing I really miss is the great quotes that were on my paper calendar. Daily I was greeted with some wonderfully movtivating quote. I miss those.

I could gather all the quotes, create a database, check the database, map the database with Microsoft Outlook…but just talking about is making my head spin!

What I did find was a cheap great application that did all that for me! This was originally created to sync with a Palm device but the reality is the database stores in Microsoft Outlook or Palm Desktop and is a great asset for desktop users too.

With this cheap, easy to install Daily Wisdom 2009 from Aurora Software will deliver a quotation every day from January 1 to December 31! All you have to do is import the data file into Outlook or Palm Desktop programs on your PC and then you are ready to go.

Jamie and Jackie are young. They want to get married. They want a big-ish wedding. They have had hard times and are financially unable to afford the wedding of their dreams. They have a really moving and sweet love story. You can visit their website and read their entire story at www.thepoorbride.com.

• The need…supplies, services and cash for a wedding. A honeymoon.
• The method…create a website, radio spots and news reports that will generate the fulfillment of the needs.

You have to give credit to Jackie for the ingenuity of building a website with their plea for help. Very creative. The website is not really all that impressive but how many people actually follow through with what they perceive is a brilliant idea. You simply must give Jackie credit for coming up with such an intelligent plan to meet their wedding needs.

I don’t know why people here in Texas are so upset over their website. In the north it is common practice to hold a pre-wedding raffle. My sister-in-law (who is a Yankee converted to Texan by marriage) told me that up north they will buy some big ticket item like a big screen TV and sell raffle tickets for the chance to win it. Then the proceeds from the raffle help to fund the wedding and the honeymoon.

Here’s where I disagree with Jamie and Jackie’s plea. What is the point of such a big wedding when:

1. You already have a kid out of wedlock with somebody else and
2. You have already been living together for quite some time.

This all seems to put a bad taste in my mouth for generosity and sacrificing on my part. I know…we all make mistakes…ya-da, ya-da, ya-da

I would rather donate to a couple who has saved themselves for each other (that means they didn’t sample the “goodies” before they married). Whose love story was a struggle to uphold the virtues taught them by their parents, grandparents and church. I did notice they pulled the “God” card on their website but also noticed they don’t mention attending any church. If they are attending church why is their church not supporting them? Are they getting married in a church?

I have been married for over 22 years. We waited to have children until after we were married. We had a small ceremony paid for by us and our parents. I saved money by making all the decorations myself, designing and creating all the floral arrangements, carefully selecting the printer for the invitations (nowadays, you could print these yourself with a PC and a printer), we bought matching bridesmaid dresses on sale from a local store and we drove to our honeymoon location. I also wore my mother’s wedding dress (from my parents wedding over 43 years ago). It was awesome!

I’m just sayin’…

Whether or not I feel inclined to support their wedding adventure I wish Jackie and Jamie the best of luck. Marriage is hard enough with  a clean, smooth start much less with few snags before you get it going. I would encourage the couple to invest in their life together with some pre-marriage and then marriage counseling. If they are attending a church this would be something that a pastor or an associate pastor could do for them. I pray that Jamie and Jackie have a blessed wedding day and a long happy life together.

For all the wonderful innovation that Microsoft provides, I think that printing an Outlook calendar is one of the most uninspiring activities I do on any given day…until now. Why this does not come pre-installed with Outlook I do not know. It just makes your calendar more attractive, appealing, fun, inspiring…I could go on and on. The Calendar Printing Assistant for Outlook 2007 is an awesome addition to your Microsoft Office suite. How I love thee, let me count the ways:

1. Additional calendar template choices…that make sense (did a woman design this…LOL)
2. Advanced calendar coloring options
3. You can choose to print by day, week, month or year
4. Select from any or all of your Calendars for printing in overlay
5. Choose to include any or all of your Task lists…or not
6. Pick a font set
7. Select a color scheme or create your very own custom color scheme
8. Choose the calendar style that suits you the best (basic, classic, modern, rounded, etc.)
9. Pick your Page Setup ( I have one calendar in letter and one in 1/2 Letter)
10. Create tabs of customization for each type of calendar you prefer
11. When you are finished your calendar looks like a professional calendar you purchased

This is what my calendar looks like when printed with the basic Microsoft Outlook print settings. Rather uninspiring.

At the time I printed these I had completed all my tasks otherwise there would be tasks in that section. The notes section is blank so I have a place to jot down whatever I need to for that day.

Here is my setting for this page (in case you want yours to look just like it)

• Day Template – Long Day 02 Letter
• Colors – Opulent
• Fonts – Georgia
• Calendar Style – Modern
• Page Setup – Letter Portrait
• Calendars and Tasks – Primary .pst calendar, Primary Tasks List and US Holidays

I can already hear some of your minds thinking “in this day and age of pda’s, smart phones and syncing why is she still printing her calendar?” I am a tactile person. I like to touch paper, highlight stuff, crumple, doodle and I jot down tons of little notes to myself all day long. Rather than having a jotter or a huge desk calendar I just print out one calendar page per day. This way I can take notes until my hearts content, everything is neat and orderly, put them in my Franklin Covey binder and refer back to them when needed. Hey, it’s my system…don’t pick on me

Installing WordPress MU

Adapted from Installing_WordPress:

Make sure you have already purchased a domain and changed the DNS settings to Hostgator before moving to step 1.

1.Download and unzip the WordPress MU package to somewhere on your hard drive, if you haven’t already. The unzipped files will be created in a directory named “wordpressmu” followed by a version or “wpmu” followed by a date.

For the sake of convenience, rename this folder “wordpressmu” before continuing as the spaces might cause conflicts later.

2. Create a database for WordPress MU on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it. I use Hostgator so here are the steps involved for this:

1. Login in the your Hostgator account http://yourprimarydomain.com/cpanel.
2. Scroll down to DATABASES and click on MySQL Database Wizard.
3. Step 1: Create A Database. Name your database something. Click on NEXT STEP.
4. Step 2: Create Database Users: Enter a Username and Password (or let the system generate on for you by clicking on the generate Password button). Click on NEXT STEP.
5. Step 3: Add User to the Database: Check the ALL PRIVILEGES box at the top of the table and click on NEXT STEP.
6. Step 4: Complete the task: gives you an overview of what you just did and then click on RETURN TO HOME.

3. Place the WordPress MU files in the desired location on your web server:

• If you want to integrate WordPress MU into the root of your domain (e.g. http://quiltingwithmoxie.com/), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress MU directory (but excluding the directory itself) into the root directory of your web server.

1. 1. This was the method I chose so I used FireFTP and browsed to my file quiltingwithmoxie.com by
   2. In the upper left of the FireFTP window click on CONNECT
   3. In the right window click on Public_html/yourdomain.com (which should be an empty folder)
   4. In the left window browse to the location on your hard drive where you stored the opened WordPress MU files. Click on the top file, hold down shift and click on the bottom file as this will select all the files in this folder.
   5. Now click on the green right pointing arrow in the center of the windows to move the files into the Public_html/yourdomain.com.

• If you want to have your WordPress MU installation in its own subdirectory on your web site (e.g. http://example.com/blogs/), rename the directory wordpressmu to the name you’d like the subdirectory to have and move or upload it to your web server. For example if you want the WordPress MU installation in a subdirectory called “blog”, you should rename the directory called “wordpressmu” to “blog” and upload it to the root directory of your web server.

4. Run the WordPress MU installation script by accessing index.php in your favorite web browser by visiting yourdomain.com/index.php. For me this would be www.quiltingwithmoxie.index.php

• If you installed WordPress MU in the root directory, you should visit: http://quiltingwithmoxie.com/index.php
• If you installed WordPress MU in its own subdirectory called blogs, for example, you should visit: http://yourdomain.com/blogs/index.php

• Note: the Database Name field is case sensitive.

• If you fill in the form and get a blank page, with no errors logged, the first thing to check is that you have php-mysql installed.

Hostgator is already Apache ready so no need to change any of this.

If you run into any trouble configuring your web server or WordPress MU, then read the README and browse the support forums.

TIPS

• Plugins: Many WordPress plugins and almost all themes work fine in MU. The best place to look for them is the WordPress Plugin Directory at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ The “WordPress MU” and “WPMU” tags list plugins made specifically for MU: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/wordpressmu http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tags/wpmu
• Themes: The only site you should download WordPress themes from is the Themes Directory at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/. If you download themes from other sites, please make sure they don’t contain sponsored links that would put your site at risk of being banned by Google.
• News: http://ocaoimh.ie/category/wordpress/ http://planet.wordpress.org/ http://mu.wordpress.org/forums/

Okay, truth! I ran into some type of complication and I kept getting a redirect loop on the domain once I installed WordPress MU. I called Hostgator tech support and they had it fixed with me up and running inside of a couple of hours. I just love their tech support!

Voila! You’re done!

I am now going to make this a full blown Cyber Quilt Guild community by adding BuddyPress and bbPress to it too…stay tuned!

Okay, a bit of honesty. My family and I always tell each other first what we have and then what is left goes into our Garage Sales. It’s a wonderful family time. • Four Powerful Ways to Use Stories

I have been in bed sick for four days. I was assuming it was the flu and yesterday my mom (who is always right) said that she believed it was strep. Since my mom’s diagnosis are always right, I woke up this morning and immediately called the doctor for an appointment for today. As a result of having balance issues I decided to let my hubby accompany me to the doctor (mistake number one!).

We checked in to the doctors office without any fanfare. Before I even had a seat in the waiting room they had already called my name. My husband just followed me right into the patient room. I sit on the bed and he sits down in a chair between counter and the scale.

While the nurse is quizzing me on my ailments my husband is continuing to use his stand up comic routine on her. She would not crack. He took this as a personal challenge to get this nurse to bow to his comedic prowess. He got her so distracted she forgot to take my blood pressure and pulse. After she left the room he expressed his disappointment in her not even letting a fraction of a smile show.

She comes back in to take my blood pressure and pulse. He continues on with his normal humorous tactics. This time she caved a little with a giggle. When she went out in the hall you could hear her telling her co-workers what he had said. My hubby wasn’t quite satisfied with her giggle.

This time she forgot to take my weight…she enters the room again to take my weight (I hate this part of any exam). I get up on the scale thinking about how the weight will not be accurate because I am fully clothed and so begins the process. She slides that bottom part over to 150…which is normal. Then she slides that bottom part over to 200…I was like no way! I turn to the nurse and said with a rather insulted tone, “Hey, get that thing off of 200! I’m not weighing anything close to 200!” All of the sudden my husband busts out in laughter. God love him. The nurse sees it first. Then I see it. He had his foot on the edge of the scale pressing down as hard as he could…the little stinker. He had me topped out at 233!

Once again the nurse goes into the hallway in hysterics over my husbands antics and tells all her co-workers about it. When the doctor comes in she has already heard the story too and is chuckling about it. By the time we hit the checkout they had heard the story as well.

By the time we arrived back at the house he had already called four of his friends and relayed this story. When I called my mother to tell her about her diagnosis being correct, she had already heard the story. This is why you should not take your hubby to the doctor!

It does take a special kind of person to find humor in any situation…LOL He has kept me in stitches for over 20 years now!

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken n coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch,  waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a  long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know, and love, the story about Grandma’s  aprons.  Or it can be a good history lesson for those that have no idea how the apron played a part in our lives.

REMEMBER:
 
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I don’t  think I ever caught anything from an apron……
